East Devon AONB launches new website putting local tourism on the map

The East Devon AONB is inviting visitors to explore its new website, aimed at raising awareness of the East Devon Way and showcasing local businesses along the route.

Created for East Devon residents, as well as national and international visitors to the area, the new site provides all the essential information needed to visit and enjoy the stunning 40 mile walking route through the heart of East Devon.

Online visitors can now download user-friendly guides for over 25 walks along the six stages of the route that passes through villages and varied landscapes of heathland, woodland and river valley, between Exmouth and Lyme Regis.

The site also features an interactive map of the East Devon Way, showing recommended places to ‘Eat, Sleep and Drink’ along the route; making it as easy as possible to plan a visit as well promoting awareness of local AONB Ambassador businesses and attractions.

“Overall our aim in creating the site was to give visitors the opportunity to learn more about the East Devon Way and encourage them to try it out for themselves,” says Chris Woodruff, East Devon AONB Manager. “By focussing on both the physical route and our Ambassador businesses that serve it, we had an opportunity to promote our beautiful landscape, healthy lifestyles and support local, sustainable tourism.”

In addition to the key features of the site, news, events, images and personal accounts of walking the route all combine to give a friendly and informative overview of opportunities and experiences available to anyone on the East Devon Way.

A guidebook for the East Devon Way is also available in hard copy from East Devon Tourist Information Centres or by contacting the AONB office. Full details available on the website.

Next steps for the Neighbourhood Plan

The final draft of the Neighbourhood Plan, taking in the comments from the Inspector and approved by the EDDC Planners, has now been submitted to EDDC and is expected to be put to Cabinet for approval in August.

If this is successful, EDDC will organise a referendum and all electors in Uplyme will be able to decide whether or not it should be adopted as part of the local planning guidance.

Please take the time to download the document (PDF file) and see what it contains – not only guidelines on where new developments happen, but hoped-for improvements to traffic and pedestrian problems in the village, support for community assets and local businesses, and the welfare of our beautiful environment.

It’s taken us 4 years to get here, so we are on the last stretch – but we do need the help of the electors to get this adopted for use by the EDDC planners etc.

Another opportunity to come to a free training session for anyone in the community who would like to find out more about their new defibrillator located at the Uplyme Village Hall. The session covers how to manage an unresponsive casualty recognising a cardiac arrest and how to perform CPR and how to use the defibrillator.

Exercise of Public Notice of 30 Days period for Uplyme Accounts 2016/17

Any interested person can inspect the accounts during the 30 days inspection period,
which includes but is not limited to local electors. Local electors have further
rights to ask the auditor or clerk questions about the accounts, and to challenge them.

Would you like to be a parish councillor?

Following a recent resignation, there is a vacancy on the Council which will be filled by co-option, since an election was not called. Are you interested in helping to shape the future of your village, or is there a burning issue that you think you could help to sort out?

If you are interested in applying, please do so as soon as possible, so that the necessary procedures can be put in place for selection. Write to or email the Clerk with a short summary of why you are interested, and any special experience or qualities you can bring to the Council.

You will be expected to attend the monthly council meetings (second Wednesday of the month at 7.15), and must be willing to engage with parishioners if they need help or advice. Qualifications for being a councillor are as follows:

  • British, Commonwealth or EU citizen
  • 18 years old at time of nomination
  • for previous year:
    • registered elector of parish and owned or occupied property in the parish, or
    • resided within 3 miles of the parish boundary, or
    • had your main or only place of work in the parish

The Plan gives Uplyme the chance to specify more detailed policies than the East Devon Local Plan, for example to influence future planning applications in the Parish, to recommend improvements to highway safety and the preservation of green spaces in the village.

The 8 week consultation period begins on 27 June 2016 and ends on 22 August 2016; all comments must be submitted by this date.

Allocation of ‘Section 106’ Agreement Funds

When new development takes place in Uplyme, the Local Planning Authority, East Devon District Council, has the opportunity to secure funds for the improvement of local community facilities. These are secured by agreement with developers under Section 106 of the Town & Country Planning Act 1990; hence the name of the fund.

The District Council has advised that one of the aspects that can be funded are facilities linked to sport and play.

The King George V Playing Fields are owned by the National Playing Fields Association but was gifted “in perpetuity for benefit of the inhabitants of Uplyme”. The area is managed and funded locally, with this being overseen by local trustees.

The funds needed to maintain and improve the playing fields, grounds and associated facilities have in the past been provided by the fees charged for the use of the tennis court.

As many local people will be aware, the surface of the tennis court has become broken up (partly due to flooding in both 2013 & 2014), and to such a degree that they can no longer be used properly. The fees for its use are therefore no longer forthcoming, which is causing a problem for the management and maintenance of the whole playing field area, although a flood relief channel has been provided, which should reduce the likelihood of future flooding.

As a result it is now proposed that some of the Section 106 Agreement money be claimed from East Devon District Council (which holds the funds) and used to repair the tennis court surface and provide new fencing. This is estimated to cost around £30,000.

The District Council has advised that this proposal should be advertised locally and therefore this notice is being placed on the noticeboard, around the village and on the Parish Council’s website and Facebook page.
